Windows is not one product — it is a family of editions targeted at different users, from home consumers to large enterprises. The edition installed on a machine determines which features are available: whether it can join an domain, whether it supports encryption, whether it can run the Editor, and how much the can address. The A+ exam tests this feature matrix directly — given a scenario or requirement, which edition is needed?
This lesson covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions, the features that separate them, and the RAM limits per edition. Windows 11 hardware requirements ( 2.0, , , and the rest) are covered in L2 — this lesson does not repeat them.
CompTIA A+ 220-1202 tests four Windows 10 editions. Each edition adds features over the one below it.
Windows 10 Home is the consumer edition — the default on most retail laptops and desktops sold at consumer electronics stores. Home provides the core Windows experience: the Start menu, Settings, Windows Defender, and standard app support. What it lacks is equally important for the exam: no domain join, no BitLocker, no Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), and no ability to accept incoming Remote Desktop connections. Home also caps RAM support at 128GB — flag for verification.
Windows 10 Pro is the business edition and the minimum required for enterprise environments. Pro adds everything Home lacks: domain join (connecting to an Active Directory domain), BitLocker (full-drive encryption), gpedit.msc (Local Group Policy Editor), and the ability to act as an host (accepting incoming Remote Desktop connections). Pro supports up to 2TB of RAM — flag for verification. Most corporate laptops and desktops ship with Pro.
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations targets high-end workstations running memory-intensive or compute-intensive workloads. It adds three capabilities beyond Pro: support for (the Resilient — covered in L1), support for persistent memory (NVDIMM — Non-Volatile Dual In-line Memory Module) — flag for verification, and support for multiple physical CPUs in a single system. The RAM limit increases to 6TB — flag for verification. Pro for Workstations is uncommon on standard business hardware but appears on engineering, scientific, and financial workstations.
Windows 10 Enterprise is intended for large organizations and is available only through Microsoft volume licensing — not through retail or standard channels. Enterprise includes everything in Pro, plus additional security, management, and virtualization features designed for centralized IT administration. Enterprise supports up to 2TB of RAM — flag for verification.

Editions build upward. Each Windows 10 edition includes everything the edition below it has. Enterprise includes all Pro features; Pro includes all Home features. The question is always what each edition adds, not what it removes — with one exception: N editions, covered below.
Windows 11 simplifies the lineup. For 220-1202, three Windows 11 editions are tested:
Windows 11 Home mirrors Windows 10 Home in its restrictions: no domain join, no BitLocker ( may be available on qualifying hardware — see the feature matrix below), no gpedit.msc, and no RDP host capability. RAM cap is 128GB — flag for verification.
Windows 11 Pro mirrors Windows 10 Pro in its additions: domain join, BitLocker, gpedit.msc, and RDP host capability. RAM cap is 2TB — flag for verification.
Windows 11 Enterprise mirrors Windows 10 Enterprise: volume licensing only, advanced management and security features, full Pro feature set included.

Windows 11 does not have a "Pro for Workstations" edition — flag for verification against the official 220-1202 objectives. For Windows 11, the exam tests only Home, Pro, and Enterprise. Do not apply the Windows 10 four-edition lineup to Windows 11.
The A+ exam presents scenarios requiring you to identify which edition is needed. The matrix below is what those questions test.
Domain join — connecting the machine to an Active Directory domain:
BitLocker — full-drive encryption managed by Windows:
gpedit.msc — Local Group Policy Editor:
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) — host vs. client:
This distinction is directly tested. A user on a Home machine can connect to a remote Pro machine. A technician cannot connect to a Home machine via RDP without third-party tools.

Any scenario requiring one of these four features points to Pro or above.
▸ COMPAT
RDP client vs. RDP host — the exam-tested distinction: ALL Windows editions (including Home) can use the Remote Desktop Connection app to connect TO another machine — that is the client role. ONLY Pro and above can accept incoming Remote Desktop connections — that is the host role. A Windows 11 Home laptop can connect out to an office Windows 11 Pro desktop. That same Pro desktop cannot connect back to the Home laptop via RDP.
Every Windows edition has an N variant: Windows 11 Pro N, Windows 10 Home N, Windows 11 Enterprise N, and so on. N versions are identical to their standard counterpart for all features relevant to A+ — domain join, BitLocker, gpedit.msc, RDP host capability, and RAM limits are unchanged. The single difference: N versions do not include Windows Media Player and certain multimedia technologies bundled in standard editions.
N versions exist because of a European Union antitrust ruling — flag for verification. EU regulators determined that bundling Windows Media Player with Windows gave Microsoft an unfair advantage in the media player market. N editions were created without those components for EU markets and are also available elsewhere for regulatory compliance.
For the exam: treat an N edition as identical to the standard edition for all feature questions. The only relevant difference is the missing multimedia components.

N versions = standard edition minus Windows Media Player and certain multimedia features. N versions exist due to a European Union regulatory requirement. All edition features — domain join, BitLocker, gpedit.msc, RDP host, RAM limits — are identical to the non-N version. "Windows 11 Pro N supports domain join" — True. "Windows 11 Pro N includes Windows Media Player" — False.
Windows supports in-place edition upgrades that unlock features without reinstalling the OS or losing user data:
Home → Pro: supported. Purchasing a Windows Pro license — through the Microsoft Store, by entering a Pro product key in Settings, or through volume licensing — performs an in-place upgrade. User files, applications, and settings remain intact; Pro features become available immediately.
Pro → Enterprise: supported. Switching to volume licensing and activating with an Enterprise license key performs an in-place upgrade to Enterprise.
Downgrading (Pro → Home, Enterprise → Pro): not supported as an in-place operation. A downgrade requires a clean install.
Windows 10 → Windows 11: in-place upgrade is supported when the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements. Reference L2 for the five hardware requirements — TPM 2.0 and UEFI with Secure Boot are the most common blockers on older hardware.
▸ NOTE
Edition upgrade does not reinstall Windows. An in-place edition upgrade (Home → Pro) unlocks features and changes the license; it does not touch user data or installed applications. This is distinct from an OS version upgrade (Windows 10 → Windows 11), which upgrades the OS itself.
All Windows 11 editions — Home, Pro, and Enterprise — share the same minimum hardware requirements. There is no Windows 11 edition that relaxes the TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot requirement. A machine that does not meet the Windows 11 requirements cannot run any Windows 11 edition, regardless of which edition is targeted.
The practical implication: when advising on a Windows 10 → Windows 11 upgrade, check hardware compatibility first — the edition selected determines features, but hardware eligibility applies to all editions equally.
